SAN ANTONIO LITHO CLUB As told by a charter member, Edwin Dyer
|
The first organizational meeting of the proposed San Antonio Litho Club was held at the Old Heidelberg Restaurant in 1967 on Pereida St. There were about 25 persons present. This meeting was a result of efforts mainly made by Ben Varela, Universal Printing Ink Co. Representative in this area. Ben was a member of the Austin Litho Club, which was already formed, and he thought San Antonio could support a club here. Those present at the meeting discussed the matter and agreed that a Litho Club could be established and officers and board members were elected. Jack Herron of Clarke printing was elected the first President of the San Antonio Litho Club. The first year was spent finding and placing personnel in the various positions necessary to operate a functioning club. A secretary, Treasurer and committee chairmen for Membership, Meetings, Programs and other duties were established and the first year was spent getting experience in club Management. At the beginning of the second year it was decided to merge the duties of Secretary and Treasurer. Edwin Dyer was elected to this dual position. His wife Jorene, who was the manager of a commercial finance company at the time, helped him set up a bookkeeping system tailored for such a club. Under this system, Edwin was able to furnish the Club President a statement of condition at each Board meeting and could provide answers about the club's finances at any time during the interval between meetings. At-the first Board meeting the Board approved to start keeping minutes of all Club meetings, according to Roberts Rules of Order. This established the written continuity and records that were needed by now. With the first year's experience behind us, the second year really established the San Antonio Litho Club as a viable club that could hold it's own from then on. It took a lot of hard work by the officers, directors and members the first two years. This dedication was rewarded by seeing the success of the San Antonio Litho Club in future years.
